What Is an RDS CAL?

A Remote Desktop Services CAL is a license that lets a user or device open a remote desktop session or run hosted apps on a Windows Server. It is separate from the Windows Server license and from standard Windows Server CALs.

When Do You Need One?

• You host desktops or applications on Windows Server 2016 for remote users
• Staff connect from home, branch offices or mobile devices
• You run a Remote Desktop Session Host beyond the two administrative connections Windows Server includes for management

Licensing Notes

• Windows Server 2016 and standard Windows Server CALs are required and sold separately
• RDS CALs are installed on your Remote Desktop Licensing server
• 2016 RDS CALs cover Windows Server 2016 and earlier hosts

Do I need one CAL per connection?

You need one CAL per licensed user or device, not per simultaneous session.
