Microsoft Windows Server 1 Device CAL License – Client Access License

The Microsoft Windows Server 1 Device CAL is a Client Access License that lets one device, such as a shared workstation, kiosk or point-of-sale terminal, access a licensed Windows Server.

When to Choose a Device CAL

• Several people share the same PC or terminal, for example on a shop floor or in a reception area
• Shift-based teams where many users use a small number of devices
• Devices that connect to file, print, Active Directory or other server services

Licensing Notes

• One Device CAL per device that accesses the server, no matter how many people use it
• A Windows Server license is required and is not included
• The CAL version must be the same as or newer than the server version
• Remote Desktop Services access needs separate RDS CALs

Device CAL or User CAL?

Buy Device CALs when many users share few devices. Buy User CALs when each person uses several devices.
